Thomas Welby

Thomas Earle Welby (11 July 1810 – 6 January 1899, Jamestown, Saint Helen) was a Bishop in the Anglican church.

Early life and education

Thomas Earle Welby was the second son of Sir William Earle Welby, the second baronet, and Wilhelmina Spry, daughter of William Spry. He was educated at Rugby School Christ's College, Cambridge before joining the army, becoming a Lieutenant in the 13th Light Dragoons. Sold out of the army in 1837, he married Mary Browne in the same year.[1]

Ecclesiastical career

Welby was ordained in the diocese of Toronto, and in 1842 became rector of Sandwich in Western Canada, Rector of Newton-near-Folkingham. Then Archdeacon of Georgetown, South Africa in 1856 and Bishop of St Helena 1867 - 1899.

Death

He was killed in a carriage accident at Jamestown.
